I tried to think of any other games I played that do the same, and the closest I could of was Ghost Recon:Wildlands and that is still a long ways off from what I described. I thought I'd mention it, as I've encountered people who play multiplayer but never gave the campaign a shot. Especially since you can play as a number of the other pieces.
The scope and lore actually makes things feel pretty significant, and make it feel like your part is important, but also make it clear you are just one piece on the board. The key players in the story are NPCs that you may only encounter once while playing as a given character, or just a callsign on the radio. Obviously there is some stuff just inherent to being the player, but the story lines do a very good job of making you just happen to be the regular dude in the right place at the right/wrong time. I've just finished playing through the single player campaign of ARMA 3, and thought that the experience of general unexceptionalism is kind of special.
